One of Toms big projects this year is the construction of a new (replacement) back country hut in Granity Pass, on the Mount Owen masiff at the southern end of Kahurangi National Park. The hut site is at 1220m. altitude and requires and hour and half drive (from Nelson) and about a 6 hours to walk get into.
On 8th May, Tom and some of his colleagues visited the hut site to decide on exact location / orientation and geotechnical issues (flood, rockfall, soil types, avalanche likelihood etc..). It was a glorious day.
Fortunately he had a helicopter on hand - so 25 minutes after leaving Nelson he was there.
